Course Description: This 8 hour course will train participants on the basics of installing onsite wastewater treatment systems. The course is broken down into six sections:

Jim Anderson

Jim Anderson, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate at the University of Minnesota. He has worked on the complex interactions between soil and wastewater and how they affect the design and operation of onsite wastewater
treatment systems since 1971. He worked with the industry's educational pioneer, Roger Machmeier, in developing Minnesota's renowned educational program.


Dave Gustafson

David Gustafson, P.E. is a civil engineer who has been a trainer in the nationally recognized Minnesota licensing program for more than 10 years. He has explained septic system operations and performance to more than 10,000 people from more than 30 states. He is a registered civil engineer and regularly designs, troubleshoots and gets his hands dirty in the onsite field. His approach to training is hands-on and practical with a spice of humor.

Topic: Exhibit Hall

Course Description: The states of Wisc. and Mass. are now offering credits for simply visiting the exhibitors in the Exhibit Halls.
NOTE: While this is listed for all three days the exhibit halls are open, the credits apply only toward one of those days. For example, if you visit the exhibit halls only on Thursday, that will count for 9 credits in Wisconsin. If you attend all three days, you still will get only 9 credits in Wisconsin.

Topic: Liquid Waste Removal Track

Course Description: Throughout the history of sewage disposal many assumptions have been made about the long-term viability and sustainability of the decentralized wastewater treatment model. Arguments are made based on such assumptions that sewered infrastructure is the only reliable long-term sustainable option. The focus of this presentation is on creating an open discussion about the preconceptions and myths regarding management and sustainability of the decentralized wastewater treatment model.

Eric Evans

Eric Evans is a national environmental health registered sanitarian and is certified by the Washington State Department of Licensing as an onsite wastewater treatment systems designer/inspector. He is president and co-founder of eOnsite LLC, a developer of specialized wastewater management software that has been applied and adopted by both private industry and regulatory jurisdictions, assisting in the management of hundreds of thousands of wastewater systems. He serves as a board member on the Washington State Onsite Sewage System Association and is a member of National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association. Evans also consults to local health departments with the coordination and development of their wastewater management programs. He is a graduate of Oregon State University with a bachelor of science degree in environmental health.

Course Description: This session will discuss the microbial aerobic process to manufacture exceptional quality Class A biosolids and residential strength effluent from septage, biosolids (wastewater treatment plant), fats, oils, grease, portable restroom and holding tank waste into lifecycle products.

John Campbell

John Campbell is a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in science, mathematics and landscape architecture. He established Site Planning Development, a design and building firm in 1971 and has been a licensed septage hauler since 1980, establishing Big Fish Environmental LLC in 2005. He works in collaboration with Dr. Joan Rose, (Michigan State University), Dr. Albert Venosa (Environmental Protection Agency) and Dr Makram Suidan (University of Cincinnati).

Topic: Municipal Track

Course Description: This session will discuss the implementation and reason to use sewer service meters for the location and cost-effect management of inflow/infiltration and exfiltration flows from sewer service connections. It also will focus on metering sewer flows from each connection for the purpose of customer billing and maintenance services.

Kirk Nivens

Kirk Nivens, PE, PLS, is president of City Meter Inc. and has been a municipal consulting engineer for 36 years.

Course Description: This seminar will cover the topic of dewatering polymer: Why would I use it? What is it and how does it work? Water Contaminants, and how to remove them. It also will cover practical product knowledge and applications.

Ed Winn

Ed Winn has been involved with the use of products for liquid-solid separation in sales and management for 34 years. He trained with two of the largest chemical suppliers in the world, at which time he received several process patents. He is employed at Fort Bend Services Inc., which is heavily involved with the septic, oil and grease industry.

Course Description:
Rotating waterjets have revolutionized the waterblast cleaning industry. Their capability and efficiency have greatly enhanced the use of waterjet technology. Over the last 15 years a large number of swivels and spinning nozzles have been developed. As a result, a wide variety of tools are available, with very different operating characteristics. Some of the differences are the result of optimizing the tool for different types of work. This seminar will discuss the results of testing to determine the influence of different operating parameters and effectiveness. The parameters studied include pressure, rotation speed, standoff, size of jets, angel of jets and type of target material.

been with StoneAge for 19 years and has worked closely with all aspects of

Jeff Peltier

Jeff has been in the portable sanitation for more than twenty-six years and has first hand knowledge and experience of what today’s owners, operators, and start-ups are facing. Jeff began his career in portable sanitation with a small family owned business. From there, he advanced to a general manager position at a national Fortune 500 company. Jeff then decided to go out on his own. Starting from scratch and with zero units, Jeff and his business partner successfully grew a portable sanitation business servicing over 1,600 units.

Jeff now holds the position of Midwest Area Sales Manager for Hampel Corp., a leading manufacturer of Portable Restrooms. Hampel Corp., founded in 1976, is an ISO certified company producer of thermoformed plastic components, and developer, manufacturer and marketer of proprietary products. With design, engineering, tooling, molding, production, and distribution housed all under one roof, Hampel boasts one of the most complete and integrated manufacturing facilities in the plastics industry.

Katie Potter

Katie Potter graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has been working in the portable sanitation industry for 10 years and currently oversees special event sales and marketing for PORTA-JON of the Piedmont in Gastonia, NC. On a daily basis, Katie is responsible for generating new sales and managing existing business from smaller, single events to large, annual events. Katie also teaches a class on Sales and Marketing for Satellite Industries at their Preferred Customer Education Seminar and is serving a three-year term on the Portable Sanitation Association International Board of Directors as chairman of the PSAI Membership Committee.


Phil LaRoche

Phil LaRoche

For over thirty years Phil has worked for and owned a Portable Restroom and Septic business operating in southern Minnesota. Along with renting and servicing restrooms, the company has provided jetting, vacuum pump and camera service for septic customers as well as design, installation and inspection of septic systems.

Additionally, Phil worked for Satellite Industries for seven years as an Area Manager and was responsible for selling portable restrooms, hand wash stations, deodorizers and service trucks in the Midwest region of the United States.

Currently, Phil owns and operates a successful septic business in Minnesota and annually works with Satellite to conduct Customer Training Seminars.


Clyde Sanson

Clyde Sanson

Beginning in 1965, opened a portable restroom business in St. Louis, MO and soon expanded into the Kansas City, MO and Nashville, TN markets. Eventually grew to the point of having a fleet of more than 10,000 restrooms. Gained 80% market share in St. Louis and 50% market share in Kansas City and Nashville with rental prices typically 30% higher than average.

In 1988, started manufacturing a high-quality line of restrooms known as Synergy World. Eventually sold both the service business and manufacturing in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

Currently active in the portable restroom industry serving on the board of two restroom companies and working as a consultant to a major restroom supplier.

Course Description: This presentation details the type of problems typical to manholes from minor leaks to corrosion to structural impairment to complete failure. The particular defects common to each part are defined and the best corresponding renewal options are discussed. Costs relative to the life-time benefit and decision methods are delineated.

Bill Shook

Bill is president and founder of Action Products Marketing Corp. which licenses regional contractors to use its patented technology, equipment and materials to renew underground structures such as manholes, wet wells and lift stations without digging. For the past 30 years, Bill has devoted his attention to the improvement of infrastructure renewal technologies and has been awarded numerous patents.

He serves as Past President of the National Association of Sewer Service Companies, ASCE Pipeline Infrastructure Committee, AWWA Committee on Pipeline Rehabilitation, Water Environment Federation, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and North American Society of Trenchless Technology.

Course Description: This presentation will look at infiltration identification, methods and products to use for correction and remediation of infiltration and rehabilitation. It will also address proactive efforts and products to reduce or deny infiltration and thus eliminate the need for rehabilitation. Prevention is always less costly than remediation.

William Goff

William's education includes civil, electrical and chemical engineering, is a certified public manager and utilities consultant and has more than 30 years experience in the water and wastewater industry. As former Water & Sewer Superintendent for the City of Myrtle Beach, SC, he is aware of the challenges inflow and infiltration presents to utilities and will explain "How to Identify & Eliminate Manhole Chimney Area Leakage."


William Goff has been named national sales manager for Sealing Systems, Inc, which is the manufacturer of products to prevent erosion and infiltration in sanitary and storm sewer collection systems.

Goff has more than 30 years of experience in the water and wastewater water industry. After retiring from utility contracting in the Carolinas and Georgia, he was the Water and Sewer Superintendent for the City of Myrtle Beach, SC for over 9 years. He has several patents pending and has consulted with utilities and governments throughout the U.S., Canada and South America. He became a regional sales consultant for Sealing Systems in 2006.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Penn State/ICS. He is certified public manager and co-author of the South Carolina Voluntary Certification. He is a member of Water Environment Federation and American Society of Certified Public Managers.
